Uncertainty looms over rawhide of sacrificial animals

There are only seven days are left to go to start Eid-ul-Azha. But, policies of rawhide collection and preservation are not fixed yet.

No indication of collecting rawhide among banks, tannery owners, rawhide traders, seasonal businessmen and madrasa authorities is seen. As a result, the concerned are fearing that over 50 percent rawhide would be damaged this year.

Tannery owners and agents said, there is a crisis of liquid money in tannery sector. Besides, prices and demand for leather in the international market have declined. That’s why the price of rawhide is not fixed yet. If the issues are not solved quickly then it would be tough to preserve rawhides after buying those.

Following the matter, lather trader Md Rabiul Alam said, it would not be possible to preserve hides of sacrificial animals by the only tannery owners and agents. Seasonal businessmen, organized young groups and local madrasas have to come forward.

While contacted, Bangladesh Tanners association president Shaheen Ahmed said, meeting will be held with the concerned stakeholders. Decision will be finalized after discussion.
