Unusable buildings to be sealed: Housing Minister

Staff Correspondent: Public Works and Housing Minister SM Rezaul Karim said the buildings in the capital, which were constructed without following minimum rules, will be demolished. All the unusable buildings will be sealed.

The Minister said this while speaking at a ‘Meet the Reporters’ at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Friday.

He said, “The buildings in the capital were constructed without following minimum rules will be demolished. The buildings will be sealed after mentioning them unusable.”

Rezaul Karim said, “Earlier, it needed approvals from 16 institutions for constructing a building. General people were engaged to move from one table to another. We have taken initiatives and have already omitted 12 tables of the 16.”

He said, “We are working for people’s welfare. We have already enacted law to give approvals for building plan within 53 days and land clearance within 7 days.

He further said, “We do not want a single house of the capital beyond law. Though it is not possible over night as extent of Rajuk is massive. There are 500-year-old buildings in the Old Dhaka. If we want to demolish the buildings right now, it will not be possible. We want to make the buildings inhabitable after reconstruction.”
