Staff Correspondent, Tangail: A 50km-long tailback has been created on the Dhaka-Tangail highway, causing immense suffering to thousands of Eid holidaymakers.

The tailback stretched from Bangabandhu bridge area to Mirzapur’s Gorai, leaving many home-goers stuck in the traffic congestion since Sunday morning.

Sufferings of the homebound people have doubled as they have been stranded on the highway for hours, causing uncertainty over their journey towards home.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Bangabandhu bridge (east) police station Mosharaf Hossain said the bridge authority suspended collecting toll four to five times since the morning as vehicles got stranded on the highway, causing long tailback.

Following this, passengers of different vehicles become agitated and started demonstrating by burning tyres at different places on the highway, he said.

Police are trying to appease the demonstrating passengers to bring the situation under control, the OC said.

Going vehicles out of service at two places, incessant rain, two-lane highway in Alenga and additional pressure of homebound people are the reasons behind the long tailback, the OC also mentioned.
