Verdict copy on Mir Quasem at Dhaka central jail

Staff Correspondent: The copy of the Supreme Court that upheld the death sentence for Jamaat leader Mir Quasem Ali for crimes against humanity during the liberation war in 1971 has been sent to Dhaka central jail.

Research Officer of International Crimes Tribunal Famin Foysal sent the verdict copy wrapped with red clothe to Dhaka central jail on Tuesday night.

Earlier, the Supreme Court released the full text of its verdict that upheld the death sentence for Jamaat leader Mir Quasem Ali for crimes against humanity during the liberation war in 1971, rejecting the petition seeking review of the verdict.

The apex court published the 29-page verdict on its website on Tuesday afternoon.

The release of the full verdict has paved way for the government to proceed with his execution.

Earlier, a five-member Appellate Division bench headed by Cheif Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha handed down the verdict on Tuesday morning.

The other judges of the bench are Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Mohammad Bazlur Rahman.

Defence counsel Khandker Mahbub Hossain, advocate SM Shajahan and State counsel Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, Additional Attorney General Murad Reza and prosecutors of International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) were present in the court during announcement of the verdict.

The Appellate Division on Sunday fixed Tuesday to deliver its verdict over his review plea after concluding hearing on arguments placed by both the state and defence counsels.

During the hearing on the day, defence counsel Khandker Mahbub Hossain told the court that prosecution has miserably failed to prove the allegations against Mir Quasem.

On the other hand, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said the allegations were proved against Mir Quasem and he should be sentenced to death.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday started hearing the review petition filed by Mir Quasem on June 19.

In this petition, the 63-year-old Jamaat-e-Islami leader sought acquittal on all seven charges he was found guilty on.


On November 2, 2014, International Crimes Tribunal-2 handed down the capital punishment to him over crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War.


The Appellate Division upheld the verdict on March 8 this year and released the full text on June 6, hours after which ICT issued a death warrant.
