Water level in Padma River rises

Neighbouring country India has opened 109 gates of the Farakka barrage due to flood in Bihar and Uttara Pradesh. As a result, The Padma River continued to swell in Rajshahi.

The water level of the Padma almost touched the danger level on Tuesday noon. The water was flowing only 43cm below the red mark. Following rough waves and high current in Padma River, the authority started to relocate the dwellers in Chars in Rajshahi.

Rajshahi Water Development Board said, the water level in Padma rose by 18.07 centimeter this noon. Earlier on Monday morning, the level was 17.90 centimeter.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) chief engineer Mohammad Ali said that India opened the sluice gates of the Farakka Barrage following heavy rain in Uttara Pradesh and Bihar, which aided to the rise of water level in Padma.

In a press release, Ministry of Water Resources said, the gates of Farakkha Barrage remain open from July to October every year. This is regular part of the management.
