 Rain, waterlogging disrupting city life

The dwellers of Dhaka city are experiencing bitter waterlogging due to heavy and very heavy rain triggered by active monsoon in the last two days.

Most of roads and streets of the city submerged due to torrential rainfall since Monday night, throwing the life out of gear.

Like Tuesday morning, office-goers faced huge sufferings on Wednesday morning due to heavy rain.

Filthy water overflowing from roadside drains not only submerged the roads and streets, but also entered houses, shops, shopping malls and other business establishments, damaging furniture and goods.

Torrential rain caused immense sufferings to the residents of the capital Dhaka, as many low-lying areas went under knee- to waist-deep water.

Commuters had difficulty finding transport to their destinations, as vehicles remained stranded on roads for hours. Many waded through waterlogged roads or took rickshaw-vans to travel. But the rickshaw drivers charged higher fares.

An office-goer said, "Though it is usual to rain in the rainy season, but waterlogging caused by poor drainage system put people in immense suffering."

The areas that went under water include Mirpur, Jhigatala, Dhanmondi, Malibag, Shantinagar, Badda and different low-lying areas of the capital Dhaka.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast that heavy rain or thundershowers may continue till Thursday across the country.
