Woman attacked as she seeks justice for son’s death

A woman came under an alleged attack following the death of her son Mahfuzur Rahman (24) in Brahmanbaria as she sought justice for her son’s death.

Following the incident, families of the deceased and local people blocked Cumilla-Sylhet highway and formed a human chain in front of Brahmanbaria press club yesterday.

Qaiyum Mia who is named in a case filed over the death, has carried out the attack, people participating in the human chain alleged.

According to police, family members of the deceased and Qaiyum locked into an altercation which later resulted in scuffle. At one stage, Qaiyum attacked Mahfuzur’s family members.

Later, local people detained Qaiyum and handed him over to police. Mahfuzur’s mother Bachia Parvin injured in the attack was rushed to Brahmanbaria General Hospital and given first aid to her.

Bachia Parvin said, “My husband died three years ago. Miscreants have stabbed my only son to death in front of me. On Tuesday noon, accused of the case Qaiyum threatened me to withdraw the case and later started beating me up.”

Confirming the incident, Muhammad Selim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Brahmanbaria Sadar Police station, said, “Action will be taken in this regard.”

On January 2, miscreants stabbed Mahfuz with sharp weapons following giving contribution in Uttar Mourail area of the district. Mahfuz was rushed to Brahmanbaria General Hospital for treatment. He was later shifted to Dhaka for better treatment as his physical condition started deteriorating.

Mahfuz succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a Dhaka hospital on January 8.

Following the death, his mother filed a murder case accusing 10 people on January 10.

The accused in the case managed to secure bail from the High Court.
