Duty on rice, edible oil, sugar, date reduced 

Import duty on four essential items-rice, edible oil, sugar and date-have been reduced ahead of the upcoming Ramadan. 

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued a gazette notification in this regard on Thursday (February 8).

The exemptions include the withdrawal of a 10 per cent import duty on dates, a 20 per cent regulatory duty on rice, and 5 per cent duties on both edible oil and sugar.

The decision will be effective very soon and will continue till March 30 for date, April 15 for edible oil, March 31 for sugar and May 15 for rice.

This decision follows a directive from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to ensure an uninterrupted supply of these items during Ramadan.
