State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu has announced that the government will set prices of edible oil and sugar.
The announcement came after the National Board of Revenue (NBR) had reduced duty on four essential items, ahead of the upcoming Ramadan.
While talking to journalists at his Secretariat office on Thursday (February 8), the state minister said, “The government will set new prices of edible oil and sugar this week. Traders will have to sell the products at the fixed prices”.
According to a gazette notification of NBR, the exemptions include the withdrawal of a 10 per cent import duty on dates, a 20 per cent regulatory duty on rice, and 5 per cent duties on both edible oil and sugar.
The decision will be effective very soon and will continue till March 30 for date, April 15 for edible oil, March 31 for sugar and May 15 for rice.
This decision follows a directive from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to ensure an uninterrupted supply of these items during Ramadan.
