UNDP signs world’s first HFC Phase Out contract with Walton

Staff Reporter: The Bangladeshi multinational electronics brand Walton has greatly stressed on manufacturing environment-friendly energy saving refrigerators and compressors.

Of late, Walton initiated a project of phasing out Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), that are mainly used in refrigerators and air conditioners and also contributing to the global warming through depleting ozone layer.

To support Walton implement this project successfully, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) joined its hand with the local electronics giant through signing an agreement of world’s first ‘Complete HFC Phase Out Project’.

Sudipto Mukerjee, resident representative of UNDP Bangladesh, and SM Ashraful Alam, managing director of Walton Hi-Tech Industries Limited, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations at the conference room of Walton Corporate Office in the capital on Saturday last (December 29, 2018).

The agreement signing ceremony was attended, among others, by Walton Group’s Director SM Mahbubul Alam, UNDP Bangladesh’s Assistant Representative Khurshid Alam and Shaila Khan, Climate Change Specialist Mamunur Rashid, Head of Procurement Mariam Akter Rikta, Walton Group’s Executive Directors SM Zahid Hasan, Md. Humayun Kabir, also HFC Phase Out Project’s Coordinator Ashraful Ambia and other high officials.

Highlighting Walton’s effort to keep Bangladesh green, SM Ashraful Alam said, “Conservation of environment is always our top priority and thus we are glad to take part in this journey with UNDP to save the Ozone layer.”

Sudipto Mukerjee Said, “UNDP is proud to partner with Walton in the world’s single largest private sector conversion project to save the planet and help to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 12-Sustainable Consumption and Production.”
Project’s Coordinator Ashraful Ambia said, “Earlier, Walton with the assistance of UNDP was successful in phasing out HCFC completely and HFC partly. Thus, Walton initiated the Complete HFC Phase Out Project in association with the UNDP’s support.
