BUET students to continue protest Sunday

Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) continued their demonstration for the second consecutive day on Saturday (March 30) to press home their six-point demands including the expulsion of Imtiaz Hossain Rahim Rabbi.

They also boycotted classes and exams scheduled for today.

The demonstrating students also announced that they will continue the protest even on Sunday if their demands are not met.

Imtiaz Rabbi, a student of the Civil Engineering department and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) central leader, assisted the Chhatra League leaders in entering the BUET campus at night.

Earlier, the general students of different batches of the educational institution started the demonstration with various placards at their hands by gathering on the road in front of the Shaheed Minar from 8:00am.

They were protesting a gathering of Chhatra League activists in the middle of night on the campus where political activities are banned.

Although student politics has been banned on the BUET campus after the brutal murder of second-year student of the university’s electrical and electronics engineering department Abrar Fahad, some leaders and activists of BCL entered the campus around 2:00am on Thursday and carried out political activities.

Expressing resentment over the incident, the students submitted several demands to the BUET administration in writing yesterday afternoon.

The demands include the expulsion of students who assisted the Chhatra League leaders in entering the BUET campus at night and an explanation from the university administration on why political activities are allowed on campus.
