The protesting students have issued a deadline for fulfilling their seven-point demand, including declaring government Titumir College an independent university. They have announced an indefinite rail and road blockade if their demands are not met.
At a press conference at 11 pm on Friday (July 31), the students said, “If their demands are not met by 4 pm on Saturday, the ‘Barasat Barricade to North City’ programme will be held indefinitely.”
They further said, “Rail and road routes will remain under the purview of this programme. Considering the Muslim devotees who attended the Bishwa Ijtema, the barricades will be relaxed from 6 am to 11 am.”
At the press conference, Mahmudul Islam Muktar, a student of the Department of Political Science of the college, said, “If the responsible figure of the state does not communicate with us within the deadline, we will be forced to block North City and the ineffective administration of the state will be held responsible for this.”
The protesting students under the banner of “Titumir Oikya” have placed a seven-point demand.
They are calling for the official recognition of “Titumir University” along with the publication of its academic calendar.
They demand the formation of the university’s administration and the initiation of admissions for the 2024-25 academic session.
Additionally, they seek assurance of 100% student accommodation or full financial support for residential expenses.
The students also insist on the inclusion of at least two internationally recognized disciplines— “Law” and “Journalism”—starting from the 2024-25 academic year.
To maintain academic excellence, they demand the recruitment of qualified PhD-holding faculty members and a cap on student intake to ensure improved educational standards.
Lastly, they call for land and financial allocations to establish an international-standard research laboratory.
