Workers clash with cops in Gazipur, BGB deployed

Amid the ongoing workers’ unrest in the garments sector, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have been deployed in various areas including Konabari and Jarun under Gazipur City Corporation to ensure security.

A total of 22 platoons BGB were deployed for the security of the garment factories.

Garment workers have been demonstrating since the morning demanding a hike in their wages, prompting police and workers to lock into a clash.

Police and local people said workers of garment factories have been demonstrating in various areas of Gazipur for the past few days demanding wage hike. Yesterday, minimum wage for garment workers was set at Tk 12,500. But workers were not satisfied at this wage hike.

As a result, they started demonstration in Konabari, Jarun and Baipail of Gazipur since the morning. At one stage, they blocked different roads by setting fire to tyres and tried to vandalize various vehicles. The workers also started hurling brick chips at police. To bring the situation under control, police threw tear shells and sound grenades to disperse them.

AKM Ashraf Uddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Konabari Police Station, Gazipur Metropolitan confirmed the matter.
