Election Commissioner Anisur Rahman said, “It is not our duty to check who wants to take part in the national elections and who doesn’t. We announced the polls schedule as there is a constitutional obligation. There are 44 political parties registered with our commission and we urged all the parties to participate in the elections. At this moment, there is no scope to defer the polls. The election will be held as per the Constitution.”
The election commissioner said this during a view-exchange meeting with deputy commissioners of Cumilla, Chandpur and Brahmanbaria, returning officers, police super and law enforcers at the Cumilla Circuit House on Wednesday (November 22).
The percentage of people casting their votes during the national polls is not important as what really matters is if the election is participatory and fair, he said.
Anisur also said, “A constitutional vacuum will be created if the election is not held by January 28. We have not seen any abnormalities so far. We have all types of preparation to hold a fair and acceptable election.”
Cumilla deputy commissioner Muhammad Mushfiqur Rahman, Brahmanbaria Deputy Commissioner Md Shahgir Alam, Chandpur Deputy Commissioner Kamrul Hasan, Cumilla district police super Abdul Mannan, Brahmanbaria SP Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain and Chandpur SP Mohammad Saiful Islam and others attended the programme.
