Mahiya Mahi loses security deposit

Film actress Sharmin Akter Nipa, popularly known as Mahiya Mahi, has lost her security deposit as she failed to secure one eighth of the valid ballots in the 12th parliamentary election held on January 7.
The deposit of the candidates who would fail to get one eighth of the votes cast would be ‘forfeited to the government, according to Article 41 of the Representation of the People Order 1972.
According to unofficial results, Mahi received a total of 9,009 votes, about 4.10 per cent of the total vote cast, while the ruling Awami League-nominated candidate and incumbent lawmaker Omar Faruk Chowdhury won by receiving 1,03,592 votes in Rajshahi-1 (Godagari-Tanore) constituency. Omar Faruk’s nearest rival Tanore upazila AL former president and independent candidate Golam Rabbani bagged a total of 92,419 votes.
Out of eleven candidates in this constituency, eight others also lost their security money.
