Gas crisis hampers production in Gazipur factories

An acute drop in gas pressure has caused interruption in production at several factories in Gazipur. This has reduced the efficiency of dyeing wash and cloth production.

The factory authorities in the region, are in trouble as they are unable to supply the products at the specified time.

Production of thousands of industries in Gazipur district and metropolitan areas, has decreased due to gas crisis. These factories are currently running on LPG, diesel and CNG gas. As a result, the cost of production has increased drastically.

Gazipur has a demand of 600 million cubic feet of gas per day. However, only 370 million cubic feet are being supplied now.

Gas pressure has also decreased in residential areas. Besides, the gas crisis has hit CNG filling stations in Dhaka, where vehicles must now wait in long queues for hours because of low gas pressure.

Kazli CNG station owner Khokon said Gas pressure is very low. There is no pressure of gas on the line. The problem was going on since the last couple of months. But the situation has worsened over the past few days.

Md Badrul Hasan Taslim, managing director of AB Group at Gazipur BISIC area, said as the month goes by, we need to pay our workers crores of taka. But broilers and generators are being kept running using CNG and diesel at excessive cost due to shortage of gas. For the last one and a half months, the factory is going through various crises due to the crisis.

Tushuka Group director Tarek Hasan said that the gas pressure in the factory is very low. It cannot be said that production is less due to shipments. However, we have continued production activities using diesel. However, it is increasing the cost of production.
