Onion, sugar to be imported from India: State Minister

State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu has said that onion and sugar will be imported from India to meet the country’s demand.

The state minister came up the remark while responding to journalists at a views exchange meeting at his residence at around 11am on Friday at Delduar in Tangail.

“We had a meeting with the importers and producers of our country. The duty on the import of sugar, oil and dates was high. A proposal has been sent to NBR so that we can bring that duty to a reasonable level. An announcement will come in this regard next week”, he said.

“There is big good news for our country. The commerce minister of India phoned me to congratulate me. India stopped exporting onion and sugar to Bangladesh, I talked about that. About 20 thousand metric tons of onion and 50 thousand metric tons of sugar will be imported from India. Oil and sugar are also coming from other countries including Brazil”, he said.
