5 get life term in Manikganj smuggling gold case

A court in Manikganj has sentenced five people to life-term imprisonment in a case filed for smuggling gold in the district.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 50,000 each, in default, they will have to serve one more year in jail.

Senior District and Sessions Judge Joyosree Samaddar handed down the verdict on Wednesday (March 13).

The convicts are Yahia Amin from Satkhira, Aminur Rahman from Jashore, Moniruzzaman Roni from Munshiganj, Zahidul Islam and Johirul Islam from Dhaka.

According to the case statement, on October 4, 2018, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested five smugglers from a Benapol-bound passenger bus from Tara area on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway and recovered 44 kilograms of gold after searching their bodies.

Later, a case was filed with Manikganj Police Station on October 5 against the arrestees. After investigation, the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case submitted a charge-sheet against the accused. 15 witnesses have testified in the case.
