9 dead after wedding party bus falls into canal

At least nine people were killed after a microbus carrying passengers from a wedding party fell into a water canal in Amtali upazila of Barguna on Saturday noon.

The microbus was crossing a bridge in Haldia Bazar area of Chaura union at around 2:30pm. The bridge broke down and the microbus fell into a canal. 

The deceased were identified as Rubia, 45, Raiti, 22, Fatema, 35, Zakia, 35, Rukait Islam, 4, Tahia Mehjabin Azad, 7, Tasfia, 14, Ridhi, 4, and Rubi Begum, 35. 

Two were residents of Taktabunia village of Amtali upazila and seven were residents of Kokararchar village of Shibchar upazila in Madaripur district.

With the help of locals, fire service men and policemen recovered nine dead bodies.

Officer-in-Charge of Amtali Thana Kazi Shawkawat Hossain Topu confirmed the news.

Fire service men and policemen have recovered nine dead bodies, and number of deaths may increase, he said.
