DB raids in Jhenaidah to recover Gas Babu’s mobile phone

A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is conducting drives by surrounding a pond in Payra Chattar area of Jhenaidah to recover three mobile phones used by Awami League (AL) leader Kazi Kamal Ahmed alias Gas Babu who was a suspect in a case filed over the abduction of Jhenaidah-4 MP Anwarul Azim Anar for murder.

It was learnt that the three mobile phones were used to contact with Shimul Bhuiyan, another accused in the murder case, over WhatsApp.

Jhenaidah DB police officer-in-charge (OC) Jewel Islam said police cordoned off a pond in Payra Chattar area of the district since Wednesday (June 26) morning. It has been marked as a crime scene area. A magistrate has already reached the spot. 10 DB members including DB Assistant Commissioner Mahfuzur Rahman came from Dhaka. Besides, Chief of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Harun-or-Rashid is scheduled to come to Jhenaidah by helicopter.

Meanwhile, additional police have been deployed in important areas of the district since morning. Besides, fishermen and diving teams have also been kept ready to rescue the mobile phones.

Earlier on June 9, Gas Babu was placed on a seven-day remand in the case. During the remand, Babu agreed to give a confessional statement under Section 164 and confessed to his involvement in the murder in court.

Gas Babu, the Relief and Social Welfare Affairs Secretary of Jhenaidah AL, is the cousin of US citizen Aktaruzzaman Shahin, the mastermind of MP Anar murder.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim on June 14 recorded the statement upon a plea from Detective Branch Assistant Police Commissioner Mahfuzur Rahman.

Earlier the three accused Shimul Bhuiyan, Celesty Rahman and Tanvir Bhuiyan, arrested in Bangladesh, confessed to their crimes in MP Anar murder case. On June 7, detectives picked up Kamal from the Adarshapara area in Jhenaidah in connection with the case.
