Water level in Surma river increased by 28cm

There is a possibility of flood in Sunamganj again. The water level of all the rivers in the district has started to rise due to heavy rains and onrush of upstream water.

According to the Sunamganj Water Development Board, the water of Surma river has increased by 28 cm at Sholghar point of Sunamganj municipality in the last 24 hours (from 6 pm on Saturday to 6 pm on Sunday). Currently, the water of Surma River is flowing 42 cm below the danger line at the point.

Around 35 mm of rains were recorded in Sunamganj from 9 am yesterday to 9 am today. During the same period, Cherrapunji in India recorded 187 mm of rainfall.

Locals said about 4 lakh people are still suffering in Sunamganj due to the first round of floods. Meanwhile, the meteorological office has issued a new warning of heavy rainfall for the next three days. As a result, people of the region are fearing that new phase of flood may hit the district.

Mamun Hawladar, Executive engineer of Sunamganj Water Development Board said the water levels in Sunamganj rivers are increasing due to heavy rains and onrush of upstream water in Cherrapunji. Sunamganj may experience heavy rains and very heavy rains at some places in the next 72 hours. The water in the rivers and streams will rise and cross the flood limit and may cause short-term floods.

Earlier, around seven lakh people in Sunamganj marooning due to the flood, which started on June 16, caused by heavy downpours and water from the hill slopes.
