Water levels of Surma, Kushiyara rivers again above danger level

Water levels of all the rivers including Surma, Kushiyara in Sylhet increased in the last 24 hours. The level increased by an average of three to four centimeter at almost all points.

Although the Kushiyara was already flowing over the danger line earlier but, the water of Surma river in Kanaighat crossed the danger level on Sunday night due to continuous rainfall and upstream floods.

Sylhet water development board sources said that water started to flow over the flood limit at Fenchuganj point of Kushiara river from June 2. The water level was flowing 81 cm above the danger line at 9:00 am on Monday (July 1).

Water development sources also said the Surma River at Kanaighat surpassed the danger level on Sunday night. The river is flowing 30 cm above the danger level at 9:00am on Monday.

On the other hand, the water levels of the rivers flowing through Jaflong, Companyganj and Jaintapur areas of Goainghat bordering Sylhet, also increased in the last 24 hours.

According to, Sylhet district administration, around 10,903 people from 10 upazilas, out of 13 upazilas in the district, have taken shelter in the flood-shelters. A total of 653 flood-shelters were kept ready.

Deepak Ranjan Das, Executive Engineer of Sylhet Water Development Board, said the waters of the two rivers come together in Kushiyara river. That’s why the water level of the river drops slowly.

Sylhet Meteorological Office Assistant Director Shah Md. Sajib Hossain, said Sylhet recorded 39.6 millimeters of rain in the last 24 hours. And today (Monday) 65 mm was recorded between 6 am and 9 am. Heavy rain is predicted today.
