Engineer responds to allegations made by ex-wife over taking bribe

Ashrafuzzaman, Assistant Engineer of Nilphamari Public Works Department, is involved in bribery, corruption and irregularities in the construction of model mosque and Islamic cultural centre, his ex-wife Rezwana Hasnat Khushbu has alleged.

On Wednesday (July 3), she submitted a written complaint to Nabirul Islam, Secretary of Housing and Public Works. After that, Ashrafuzzaman was contacted to get proper explanation about the matter.

Talking to this reporter on Thursday (July 4), he denied all the allegations brought against him and said, “I divorced Khushbu on March 3 this year due to family feud. After two months, my ex-wife filed a case under women and children repression prevention act and another case under dowry prohibition act against me. I am currently on bail from the high court and lower court in those cases.”

At that time, Ashrafuzzaman complained and said, “These false allegations are being made against me so that I withdraw the divorce.”

He claimed, “I have no house or property of my own. My father has only a tin-shed house.”

Earlier, while talking to the media yesterday, Rezwana Hasnat Khushbu said, “I have failed to remove him from corruption despite repeated requests after receiving information about taking bribes by my husband for the construction of religious institutions. I was even physically tortured for preventing him from doing corruption.”

She also said, “Although he was a child of a very ordinary family at the time of marriage, Ashrafuzzaman currently has a large amount of property including a luxurious house. It is not possible without bribery and corruption. I want an investigation into the corruption and redress of the torture on me."

Rezwana Hasnat Khushbu could not be reached for any comment despite repeated attempts.

Director of Model Mosque Project Najibur Rahman said that strict action will be taken against the accused if the allegations of bribery and corruption are proved.

It is appropriate to mention that Ashrafuzzaman and Khushbu got married on April 23, 2020. They have a two-and-a-half-year-old son.
