India required to inform Bangladesh before releasing water: Adviser

According to the principles of international river law, as a neighboring upstream country India is required to inform its downstream neighbor Bangladesh before releasing water to minimise the loss of lives and property.

Forest and Environment and Water Resource Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan made the comment while visiting the vulnerable embankment of the Khowai river in Habiganj on Friday.    

She called upon India to comply with the international river law, upholding a collaborative mentality with its neighboring countries.

About the intensity of this year’s flood, she underscored the need for rescuing the country’s rivers from illegal occupiers before any excavation can take place.
