Sufferings increase as floodwater receding in Noakhali

Various types of crises are increasing in different places of Noakhali due to the stranded water with floodwaters started receding in the district.

Due to the sinking of tubewells, there has been an acute shortage of pure drinking water in flood-affected areas. There is also a shortage of cooked food. Also, various water borne diseases including skin diseases and diarrhea have increased. As the water recedes, damages emerge.

It is learnt that eight upazilas of the district have been affected by floods. The flood situation in the district has improved a lot as there has been no rain for three days and floodwaters are receding. There is an acute shortage of food and pure drinking water across the district.

Although relief materials are provided by public and private institutions, various social organizations and voluntary organizations, it is less than the necessity. Due to poor transportation system, relief is not reaching out to the remote areas properly. The number of diarrhea and snakebite patients is increasing in the district.

Noakhali District Civil Surgeon Dr Masum Iftekhar said, the number of diarrhea patients is increasing. The number of skin disease patients is also increasing at an alarming rate. We are providing water purification tablets, food saline to the flood affected areas so that the outbreak of diarrhea does not spread into an epidemic.

An adequate quantity of medicines has been provided to the upazila health center for the treatment of skin diseases, he said.
