1 dead, 53 injured as violence spreads to Rangamati

At least one person was killed and dozens of people injured in clashes centering Khagrachhari’s Dighinala incident in Rangamati.

The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately.

In an effort to control the situation, the district administration issued a section 144 in the district.

Army, BGB and police personnel were deployed in the area to bring the situation under control.

Witnesses said that a group of hilly people brought out a rally in Rangamati protesting an attack centering Dighinala incident. Meanwhile, rumors and excitement spread throughout the Rangamati town when the procession arrived at Banarupa. Meanwhile, attackers torched some business firms there.

Rangamati Sadar Hospital RMO Dr Shawkat Akbar Khan said a total of 53 injured people arrived in the hospital after the clashes. 19 of them, were admitted to the hospital and three critically injured people were sent to Chattogram Medical.

Besides, 34 of them were released after giving primary treatment. An unknown person died in the incident, the doctor said.

Confirming the matter, Rangamati additional police super (Sadar circle) Md Saiful Islam said the overall situation in Rangamati is under control now.
