Abu Sayeed murder case: Travel ban issued on 14 accused

A court in Rangpur has imposed a travel ban on 14 accused in a case filed over the killing of Begum Rokeya University (BRU) student Abu Sayeed, who died in bullet injuries fired during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on July 16.

Judge Asaduzzaman of Rangpur Metropolitan Tajhat Cognizance Court issued the order on Thursday (October 3).

Earlier on September 30, the investigating officer of the case filed an application seeking a travel ban on the 14 accused in the case.

The accused who received the travel ban are former deputy inspector general (DIG) of Rangpur range Abdul Baten, former commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Md. Moniruzzaman, president of the university unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League Pomel Barua, general secretary Shamim Mahfuz, organising secretary Dhananjay Kumar Roy, office secretary Babul Hossain, former officer-in-charge (OC) of Tajhat police station Rabiul Islam, Begum Rokeya University police camp in-charge Bibhuti Bhushan Roy, Associate professor of mathematics department at BRU Mashiur Rahman, associate professor of public administration department Asaduzzaman Mandal, official at the proctor office Rabiul Hasan Rasel, Rangpur Metropolitan Police’s deputy commissioner Al Maruf Hossain, assistant commissioners Md. Arifuzzaman and Al Imran Hossain.

On July 16, Abu Sayed, a student of English Department at Begum Rokeya University, was shot dead by police during a clash between students and police on the campus.

On August 18, Ramzan Ali, elder brother of Abu Sayeed, filed a murder case with the court of Rangpur additional metropolitan magistrate against 16 identified and 30-35 unidentified people.
