Mahmudur Rahman walks out of jail

Mahmudur Rahman, former acting editor of the daily Amar Desh, was freed from jail after he secured bail from a Dhaka court in a case filed over the attempted abduction and murder of Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
He came out of the jail at around 3:30pm on Thursday (October 3), confirmed Amirul Islam, jail super of Kashimpur High Security Central Jail.
Earlier, Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court Judge Mohammad As-Shams Jaglul Hossain granted bail to Mahmudur Rahman after a hearing today.
On September 29, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbubul Haque sent Mahmudur Rahman to jail after he surrendered before the court and sought bail in the case.
Mahmudur Rahman was convicted by the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACCM) Asaduzzaman Noor on August 17 last year.
Senior journalist Shafique Rehman, and Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskrit Sangtha leaders Mohammadullah, Rizvi Ahmed Sejar and Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan were also convicted in the same case.
According to the case documents, the accused persons held a meeting at home and abroad for kidnapping and killing Joy, the then ICT adviser to Sheikh Hasina in September 2011.
