Flood situation deteriorates in Sherpur

The flood situation in Sherpur district that deteriorated due to the heavy rains coupled with onrush of upstream water from the hilly regions has not improved yet in last three days.

At least 10 villages have been inundated again, although the upstream water started receding slightly from Saturday night. So far, 120 villages of at least 17 unions of Jhinaigati and Nalitabari upazilas in the district have been flooded. Several villages of Nokla, Sreebardi and Sadar upazilas have also been submerged. As a result, over one lakh people have become stranded due to the flood.

The floods that have hit five upazilas— Sherpur Sadar, Nalitabari, Jhinaigati, Nokla and Sreebardi— have claimed the lives of seven people so far. Upstream water from India’s Meghalaya has continued to inundate lowland areas.

Army, police, fire service and local volunteers have launched rescue operations in the affected areas.

Crops, livestock, poultry, and homes were destroyed, leaving many farmers devastated. Roads remained submerged or damaged, causing suffering to residents.

The local administration designated schools as temporary shelters.

Control rooms were set up, and separate teams were coordinating relief efforts.

Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Sherpur, said: “5,000 packets of dry food have already been sent to the affected areas. Police, army and other organizations are working. We are ready to face any situation.”
