Members of Myanmar's Arakan Army have allegedly abducted five Bangladeshi fishermen from the Naf river near Shah Porir Dwip in Cox's Bazar's Teknaf.
Sabrang Union Parishad member Abdus Salam said that the kidnapping occurred on Monday noon but the issue came to light on Tuesday (October 8).
The fishermen are – Md Alam, 22, son of Abdur Rahim, Md Rasel Mia, 23, son of Abdul Mazid.
Teknaf-2 Battalion (BGB) Commander Lt Col. Md Mohiuddin Ahmed said that the matter was reported by the local public representative and the family members of the fishermen. The area in Myanmar where this took place is under the control of the Arakan Army due to ongoing conflicts within Myanmar.
Consequently, we assume that the Arakan Army members are the ones who have abducted the fishermen. Negotiation is underway to secure the fishermen’s return.
