5 killed in lightning strikes in Kushtia

At least five individuals were killed and four others injured after being struck by thunderbolts at Mathura union of Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia district on Wednesday (October 9).

The deceased were known as Awlad Hossain, 60, son of Haus Jaddar, Nizam Hossain, 42, son of Moyen Ali, Tarikul Islam, 20, son of Muzam Hossain, and Sumon, 35, son of Abdul Wabed, and Jahura Khatun, 40, wife of Jaman Hossain.

Local sources said first trio were struck by a streak of a thunderbolt while they were working on a field amid heavy rainfall, leaving them dead on the spot and other co-workers critically injured. Later, another farmer died under treatment around 7:30pm.

Meanwhile, Zahura Khatun died on the way to a nearby hospital after being hit by lightning strike while working at her house.

Daulatpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahbubur Rahman confirmed the matter.
