The Amirganj railway station in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi has been remained in a ‘non-functional’ state for almost two years.
On Friday (November 1), the station master’s room was seen locked. A signboard was noticed on the window that reads ‘Notice, Amirganj station closed’.
Locals said, due to the absence of the station master, the signal motor of the loop line has been stolen. Since the station has not been used for a long time, garbage bags are seen on the railway tracks. Many railway equipment has been damaged. However, Amirganj station is very important on the Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Chattogram railway routes. Thousands of people from seven unions used to commute from this station every day.
In this regard, Narsingdi Railway Station Master Md. Musa said, not only Amirganj in Narsingdi, but also about 40 stations in the eastern and western regions of the railway have been remained closed due to lack of station masters. The closed stations will be reopened by appointing station masters soon.
