Sarjis Alam, a coordinator of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has said that about 2,000 people did not give their lives and 50,000 people did not give blood just for an election in the country.
He made the remark while distributing financial aid to families of the martyrs of July uprising at the deputy commissioner’s office in Sylhet city on Saturday.
“We must go for an election only after necessary reforms. Otherwise, we will remain in the same place. We are not saying that reforms will continue for 5 to 6 years. But necessary reforms are needed”, he said.
“The revolution did not take place just for an election. People suffered for 16 years because of the corrupt systems, and the Election Commission was the most corrupt institution. We cannot hope for a fair election without reforming it,” he said.
