Ready-made garment workers (RMG) are holding demonstration again by blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur’s Maleker Bari area, demanding unpaid wages.
The protests led to severe traffic congestion stretching 20 kilometers on both sides of the highway, causing huge suffering to commuters.
The workers of TNZ Apparels Ltd began the protests on Sunday (November 10) morning.
It is learnt that TNZ Apparels Ltd, located in Gazipur City Corporation’s Maleker Bari area, has been closed without paying workers’ salaries. After failing to receive their dues despite repeated requests, the workers gathered and began protesting by blocking the highway. Both police and army personnel are on the spot trying to control the situation.
The authority of the factory could not be reached for any comment.
Deputy Police Commissioner (Traffic) of Gazipur Metropolitan Police, Ibrahim Khan, told that the RMG workers have again blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur’s Maleker Bari area, demanding unpaid wages for three months.
Efforts are ongoing to negotiate with both the factory owners and the workers to resolve the situation, he said.
