‘Bus driver used to take drugs, licence was not renewed’

RAB personnel have arrested the driver of the bus that a day earlier killed six people in a crash at the Dhaleshwari toll plaza of Dhaka-Mawa expressway.

Senior Assistant Police Super Taposh Karmokar (Media officer) confirmed the matter on Saturday.

The driver Md Nuruddin was arrested from Nayaranganj’s Siddhirganj area, where he went into hiding following the deadly accident, he said.

In primary interrogation, it is found that the bus driver used to take drugs. His driving licence was not renewed either. The driving assistant is yet to be nabbed.

The bus was out of service for a long time. After being repaired, it was taken on the road on that day. The bus driver realized from the beginning that brakes of the bus were faulty, the RAB officer said.

On Friday morning, a speeding bus hit three vehicles – a sedan, a microbus, and a motorbike – leaving four of a family and two others dead and nine injured.

The four of a family belonged to the sedan, while the other two deceased rode on the motorbike.
