Halls open albeit academic activities halted at KUET, probe begins

Three days after the attack on general students, panic has not disappeared yet at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET). Although academic activities have been suspended as per the syndicate’s decision, all the halls remain open.

However, some students have left the halls due to insecurity, but most of them are staying in the halls.

Meanwhile, the ordinary students have put locks on the academic and administrative buildings of KUET to press home their five-point demand. Security has been increased on the campus.

A four-member investigation committee has already initiated working to identify those behind the attack.

Confirming the above-mentioned issues on Thursday (February 20), the university’s public relations officer Shaheduzzaman Sheikh said, “Security has been increased on the campus under the supervision of the divisional commissioner, taking the safety issue of students into consideration. The Pro-VC is performing the duties since the VC is staying in Dhaka.”

On Friday (February 21), general students of KUET announced a protest programme in response to the attack. The programme will begin at 3 pm and continue till 5 pm today.

Professor Dr MA Hashem, head of the investigation committee, said, “We have launched the investigation into the incident from Thursday. We have received some information and evidence. We will talk to the students for the investigation. However, the investigation is being somewhat disrupted as the administrative and academic buildings are locked.”

When contacted, KUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Masud said, “All the demands of the students have been met. I hope they will return to class soon. I am not resigning as I have met all their demands.”
