Protesters block Dhaka-Mymensingh highway

Ready garment workers in Gazipur have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway protesting the death of a female worker in a recent road accident in Gazipur.

The workers of Golden Refit Garments Ltd started protests around 8:00 am on Wednesday (March 12). Later, they blocked the highway.

The protesting workers said Golden Refit Garments Limited factory worker Jannatul Ferdous Tamanna’s (32) child was sick. She requested the authorities to allow her a leave around 9 pm yesterday for treatment. However, she was not granted leave.

Then early in the morning, at around 5:40 am, Tamanna was struck and killed by a truck and an autorickshaw while crossing the highway on her way to work.

Angered by the incident, her co-workers staged a demonstration, demanding the arrest of the truck driver and compensation for Tamanna’s family.

Joydebpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Halim said that the traffic on that road is closed. Additional law enforcers are deployed in the area. Efforts are being made to persuade the workers to leave the road.
