‘Suu Kyi’s speech a plot to prolong repatriation process’

Cox’s Bazar Correspondent: The statement of Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi to take back the “verified” Rohingya refugees is tantamount to a conspiracy of the Myanmar government, claimed Rohingya people who have taken shelter to camps in Cox’s Bazar.

On the other hand, security analysts termed her statement an ill motive to delay the repatriation process.

On April 29, a high-level delegation of the UN Security Council visited Cox's Bazar after eight months to see the brutalities that Rohingyas faced during the recent ethnic cleansing in Rakhine State of Myanmar. There, they visited Kutupalong Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar and interacted with Rohingyas living on zero line at Tambru border area at Naikkhangchhari in Bandarban.

During their visit to the camps, they heard tales of brutalities from Rohingyas who have taken shelter in Bangladesh fleeing persecution in Myanmar. Later, the delegation visited Myanmar on April 30 after holding a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

On May 1, the UN delegation sat with Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi which is the first high-level meeting since the Rohingya crisis. In the meeting, Suu Kyi agreed to take back the “verified” Rohingya refugees. But Rohingyas termed this a conspiracy of the Myanmar government.

Rahim Uddin, a Rohingya at the Ukhiya camp, said, “We are the Rohingya citizen of Myanmar state. But the government is not taking us back. We are interested to move back to Myanmar.”
