Bagerhat-3 by-polls: Khaleque’s wife elected unopposed

Bagerhat Correspondent: Awami League contestant Habibun Nahar, also the wife of newly elected Khulna City Corporation Mayor Talukdar Abdul Khaleque, has been elected unopposed in the Bagerhat-3 by-polls as there was no other candidate in the election race.

Returning Officer Md Nuruzzaman Talukder made the announcement on Monday.

Habibun Nahar submitted her nomination papers on May 24, the last of day of submission, as the lone candidate, said Returning Officer Md Nuruzzaman Talukder.

He also said, although two nomination papers were sold, only Habibun, wife of newly elected Khulna City Corporation Mayor, Talukder Abdul Khaleque, submitted hers.

Film actor Shakil Ahsan who collected the other set of nomination papers did not eventually submit them, Nuruzzaman said.

On May 21, Awami League picked Habibun as its candidate to contest the Bagerhat 3 by-polls slated for June 26.

On April 10, the parliamentary seat fell vacant after Awami League MP, Talukdar Abdul Khaleque, resigned to contest in the Khulna city polls.

The Election Commission on May 16 announced the schedule for the by-elections of Bagerhat 3 constituency.
