Murder case accused killed in Jashore ‘gunfight’

A murder case accused was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Jashore early Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Jewel, 29, son of Amjad Molla of Hashimpur village in the Sadar upazila.
Acting on a tiff-off that two terrorist groups were exchanging bullets in Hashimpur bazar area around 3:00am. Police rushed to the spot soon after knowing the incident, said Towhidul Islam, additional superintendent of Jashore police.
Sensing the presence of police, terrorist groups opened fire on them which forced police members to fire back in self-defence, triggering a gunfight, he said.
The gunfight left one member of the terrorist groups bullet-injured on the spot. Later, he was rushed to a nearby hospital where duty doctors declared him dead, the police official said.
Police recovered one pistol, one shutter gun and 12 rounds of bullets from the spot.
Towhidul Islam added that Jewel was key accused in a murder case and was on the run for long days.
