Hashem Khan wins Cumilla-5 by-polls unopposed

Awami League Candidate Advocate Abul Hashem Khan has been elected unopposed in the by-polls for Cumilla-5 (Burichong-Brahmanpara) constituency.

Returning Officer (RO) and Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Kamrul Hassan confirmed the matter on Friday (June 25) afternoon.

He said, “Jatiya Party nominated candidate Jasim Uddin filed application to withdraw his candidacy on June 20. June 23 was the last date for candidacy withdrawal. Jasim Uddin was the only contester against the Awami League candidate. So, AL candidate Hashem Khan was announced only contester of the by-polls.”

Hashem Khan has already been informed over his win through letter due to coronavirus, the DC added.

Cumilla-5 fell vacant as AL lawmaker Abdul Matin Khasru passed away at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in the capital on April 14.
