Bangladesh delegation reaches Rakhine

A 27-member delegation from Bangladesh has arrived in Rakhine state of Myanmar to tour new facilities built for the revival of a long-stalled plan to return the persecuted minority to their homeland.

The delegation 20 Rohingya including three women, a translator and six other officials of different offices reached Rakhine around 12:30 pm on Friday (May 5).

They are scheduled to return to Teknaf this afternoon after observing and discussing the environment there for repatriation of Rohingyas.

A Rohingya, on condition of anonymity, said, “We entered Rakhine after traveling by speedboat for about two and a half hours. The Myanmar side sent a car for us to the border. They received us with courtesy. Now we are going to the destination.”

Earlier, Additional Commissioner of Refugee Relief and Repatriation Office Shamsud Douza Nayan confirmed the visit of the delegation around 9:00 am on Friday.

The delegation started its journey to Myanmar from Jaliapara Ghat in Teknaf.

It was learned the members of the delegation will also visit the place where the Rohingyas will be kept in Myanmar after the repatriation process starts.
