Female teacher burnt to death, 2 sons injured in Rajshahi fire

A female school teacher was burnt to death and her two sons sustained burn injuries in a fire that broke out at their home at Hasnipur village in Bagmara upazila early Friday (June 30).

Locals said the fire originated from mud-woven and engulfed the house while they were asleep in the night at Madariganj locality under Bagmara upazila of the district.

The deceased mother was identified as Farida Yeasmin, 45, wife of Ejajul Basher. She was a teacher of Shibpur Girls High School under Durgapur upazila. Her husband is an X-ray expert at Durgapur Upazila Health Complex.

Two sons Dr Rashidul Basher and Dr Shafiul Basher, who completed MBBS recently, are now fighting for life at present. They were immediately rushed to the burn unit at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH). When their health conditions worsened, they were shifted to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery this morning for better treatment.

Doctors at the RMCH said 50 percent of Shafiul’s body was burnt while 22 percent of Rashidul’s body was burnt.

Nimay Roy, Fire Fighter of Bagmara Fire Station, said that the family members used to cook food in a mud-made oven on the third floor of their three-storied building.

On Eid-night, they cooked food but left the stove without dousing the stove-fire and went to bed.

Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bagmara Police Station, said an unnatural death case was filed with the police station over the death of school teacher Farida Yeasmin. Later, the body was handed over to its relatives following legal procedures.
