Hilsa fishing continues despite ban

Considering the breeding season of the national fish Hilsa, the government has imposed a 22-day ban starting October 11 (midnight) on catching, selling and transporting Hilsa to ensure safe spawning of the fish.

The 22-day ban on catching, selling, hoarding and transporting of people’s favourite Hilsa fish will continue till November 2.

Despite the government ban, fishermen have continued to catch mother Hilsa in the Padma and Jamuna rivers.

Fishermen of Hararampur, Shivalaya and Daulatpur areas are catching the fish ignoring the ban, and those fish are being sold in different floating markets.

During the Hilsa breeding period, a combined operation is being onducted at all the fisheries ghats, warehouses and hat-bazars. .

During the time, each fisherman’s family is receiving 20kg of rice from the government, under its vulnerable group feeding (VGF) program.
