Vehicular movement halted in Gazipur, vehicle set ablaze as workers protest

Workers from several garment factories in Gazipur’s Kaliakair upazila on Monday (October 30) blocked the highway for the seventh consecutive day, demanding salary hike.
They started their protest march around 10 am today.
The garment workers staged a protest march and blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway several times in the Mouchak Telirchala area.
Workers from several factories, including those in the shoe and medicine industries, took part in protest marches and highway blockades.
The workers blocked the Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways. As a result of the blockade, vehicular movement on the highways came to a standstill.
During the blockade, demonstrating workers vandalized several vehicles and set fire to a government vehicle.
Abu Siddiq, officer-in-charge (OC) of Basan Police Station, said, “Workers has been staging demonstration since the morning. Several vehicles have been vandalized during the protest. Police are trying to bring the situation under control.”
Workers from nearby Logos Apparels Ltd., Hydroxide Knitwear Ltd., APS Apparels Ltd., and Bay Footwear Ltd. launched the movement with the same demand from October 23.
