Locals said, workers of different factories were holding demonstration in Konabari and Kashimpur areas since the morning, demanding wage hike. During the demonstration, a chase and counter-chase took place between police and agitating workers. Police threw tear shells to bring the situation under control, prompting the workers to become more agitated.
At one stage, agitating workers set fire to two passenger buses in Konabari area.
Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of Gazipur Fire Service Station, confirmed the matter and said firefighters rushed to the spot to douse the fire after being informed about the incident.
