Staff Correspondent, Khulna: Students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) sat on hunger strike until death demanding compensation for four students who were killed in an explosion in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh.

They demand Tk one crore compensation to each family of the four dead students.

The strike called by the students of Textile Engineering Department started in front of administration building of KUET around 3:30pm on Saturday. Students chanted various slogans during the strike.

Students who took part in the strike said, “We are shocked and speechless losing four students of the department. At least Tk 6 lakh was spent for their treatment. But they could not live. Of the money, only Tk 50,000 was paid by KUET authority. The rest was collected from former students of the varsity who live in home and abroad.”

“Now our one-point demand is Tk 1 crore for each family of the four deceased. We will continue our strike until our demand is met,” they said.

“We will announce further programme on Sunday if the demand would not be met by the time,” the demonstrators said.

Four students of KUET on March 10 rented a flat on the third floor of six-storey AS Tower in Square Masterbari area for doing their internships at Square Fashions Ltd in Bhaluka of Mymensingh.

They were Hafizur Rahman Hafiz, 24, Dipto Sarkar, 22, Shahin Mia and Towhidul Islam, 23.

Of them, Towdhidul was killed on the spot as gas line exploded in the building, and three others were seriously injured.
