Veteran actor Smriti Biswas dies at 100

Veteran actor Smriti Biswas passed away at her house in Nashik, Maharashtra, on July 3.

She died due to age-related illness. Biswas was known for her work in Bengali, Hindi and Marathi, India Today reported.

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta condoled her death on Instagram. He wrote, “Go away in peace and to a happier place dear Smritiji. Thank you for blessing our lives (sic).”

Biswas, aged 100, had been residing in a one-room-kitchen rented flat in the Nashik Road area. She began her illustrious career as a child artiste and appeared in films by eminent filmmakers such as Guru Dutt, V Shantaram, Mrinal Sen, Bimal Roy, BR Chopra, and Raj Kapoor.

Throughout her career, Biswas shared the screen with notable actors like Dev Anand, Kishore Kumar, and Balraj Sahni in various films.

She made her film debut with the Bengali movie ‘Sandhya’ in 1930, and her final Hindi film appearance was in ‘Model Girl’ in 1960. She retired from acting after marrying filmmaker SD Narang. She moved to Nashik after her husband’s death.

Biswas celebrated her 100th birthday on February 17, 2024. She is survived by her two sons, Rajeev and Satyajeet.
