Actress dies at 43

Emilie Dequenne

The Belgian actress Emilie Dequenne has passed away at 43 in the Paris region.

Her family and agent confirmed her death on Sunday, March 16, 2025, leaving the French-speaking film community in mourning.

She earned her the Best Actress award at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival.

Diagnosed with a rare adrenal gland cancer in August 2023, Emilie faced a public and fierce struggle, sharing glimpses of her ordeal with fans and peers on social media.

Her passing, after days in palliative care, sparked a wave of tributes from stars like Jean Dujardin, Juliette Binoche, and French Culture Minister Rachida Dati, who grieved the loss of a gifted talent taken too soon.

Starting her career at 18, Emilie rose to prominence swiftly. Her debut in Rosetta, directed by brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, kicked off a path filled with profound and moving roles.

Known for films like A perdre la raison and Les choses qu’on dit, les choses qu’on fait, she captivated audiences and critics with her ability to convey intricate emotions.

Her final red-carpet appearance at Cannes in 2024, alongside her husband Michel Ferracci, marked the 25th anniversary of Rosetta and the premiere of Survivre—a title mirroring her personal fight for survival.
