Singer Rumi gets bail under wife`s custody

DHAKA, Oct 13: Popular singer Arefin Rumi has been given bail in a case relating to repression on woman.

 

After hearing the bail petition, Metropolitan Magistrate Md Anwar Sadaat granted him bail under the custody of his first wife Lamia Islam Ananya and a Tk 2,000 bond.

 

Being present at the court, the plaintiff said if the accused is released on bail, she would have no objection to it.

 

Mohammadpur police arrested Rumi and his brother Rony from their rented house at Kaderabad Housing Society early Saturday, six hours after his first wife Ananya filed a case against them under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

 

Rumi`s first wife Ananya filed the case against Rumi with Mohammadpur police station around Friday night bringing allegation that Rumi used to torture her for dowry. After two years of marriage, Rumi demanded dowry of Tk 20 lakh from Ananya`s family. Both husband and wife used to engage in altercation over the dowry and Rumi used to torture his wife everyday. Even, he refused to provide Ananya`s expenses. Whenever Ananya declined to provide dowry, Rumi resorted to torture on her.

 

Besides, Rumi got married to New York expatriate Kamrun Nesa on October 24, 2012 without her consent, Ananya alleged.

 

After the second marriage, Rumi got more terrific and used to torture Ananya. He beat Ananya tying up her hands and legs on Friday night. Being freed, Ananya went to the Mohammadpur Police Station and filed the case against her husband.

 

Rumi and Ananya have a two-and-half-year-old son Arian.

 

Rumi married Lamia Islam Ananya on April 17, 2008.
